Laura Johnston is a graduate of the University of Alberta, holding a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Food Science. Concurrently she graduated from the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition as she felt the purely scientific field of nutrition left gaps in her education.
During her exploration of the health industry she obtained her certification as both a personal trainer and yoga instructor. Laura began in the industry working as a personal trainer, then moved exclusively into nutritional coaching where she was able to positively affect the lives of over 500 members of her gym. However, the daunting task of sales expectations, pushed Laura to move her love of nutritional counselling to a no-barrier retail offering as Wellbeing Counselor at a major retailer. Once there, she had the opportunity to develop a number of community level nutrition programs with Special Olympics Alberta and local seniors groups.
That experience created an unprecedented opportunity, as Laura was acquired by Freson Bros. Fresh Markets to develop and execute a health and wellness department and program initiative that will see the expansion of health food and supplement offerings across Alberta. This role has synergistically created opportunity in Laura’s other passion, teaching, as she forges roles and job opportunities for the graduates of the CSNN. Thus further strengthening the role of nutrition experts in food retail to support families and individuals in their quest for better health. Outside of work, Laura balances the demands of a corporate nutrition career with swimming, biking, and running; training as an Ironman athlete.
