Using Feedback Tools for Healthy Weight Management During a Pandemic

Have you been snacking out of control while sitting around in self-isolation?

Have you found yourself mindlessly eating to evade boredom, stress, and anxiety?

Overeating is a common complaint from those stuck at home right now.

This is a problem!!!

First and foremost, we need to acknowledge that our immune health and our nutritional wellness are inextricably linked. The ones who have the worst outcomes with viral infections are those with comorbidities such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity.

Whether or not you have such diagnoses, there are still more reasons we need to prioritize our health today.

Here is a timeline to give us all a big wake-up call!

SARS 2002
MERS 2015 (13 years later)
COVID 2019 (4 years later)

According to these stats there appears to be a possible rise in the frequency of viral contagion.

This presents a need to improve our nutritional wellness for the sake of our future immunity.  When it comes to our health, we always have to think short term and long term! How can we care for our kids or spouse if we are getting taken out by a virus? Taking care of our health today is essential, so we can be one of the 75-85% who is barely symptomatic if we happen to contract a virulent strain.

How do we learn to be selective with our dietary choices to incorporate weight management?

It’s ok to acknowledge that we enjoy our snacks and comfort food. This article is not trying to get anyone to give up their favorite foods. What I will emphasize is that we place some emphasis on our dietary discretion. It’s unrealistic to attempt to stop snacking or enjoying our favorite foods when under this much stress. We all want comfort right now, and trying to bank on willpower spells a recipe for disaster. So yes, we can continue to enjoy delicious snacks. We simply need to have a little more strategy!

What are the most efficient methods for self-accountability?

Using tools to provide feedback on our health routine is the fastest way to ensure self-accountability.

  1. Wifi Enabled Scale
I recommend using a scale that has a bluetooth/wifi component to track body weight daily (as long as you do not have an eating disorder). I use the RENPHO scale myself. A wifi-enabled-scale is a helpful tool for automatically charting and trending weight over time. The numbers don’t lie! It’s best not to ask your spouse how you look. Spouses tend towards being unforthcoming in these situations. The scale, on the other hand, will display the direct impact of calorie surpluses or the ability to maintain dietary consistency. A scale acts as a tool used purely for objective self-analysis. The weight on the scale does not indicate your value as a human being or your self-worth. Your scale will, however, will show if you have failed to stay accountable to sound dietary strategy.
  2. Waist Circumference Tape
Waist circumference is the fastest indicator to determine your risk for all-cause mortality. Variances in your waist circumference can also indicate the possibility of GI inflammation. Water that accumulates due to inflammation in the gut can travel to the skin’s surface, making its circumference larger.
  3. Blood Sugar Meters
This recommendation is for those of us who do not have any blood sugar related diagnoses. Tracking blood sugar levels enables us to see how consistent we are with our nutrition and exercise to understand whether if we need to make any corrections to our routine.I have been tracking my blood sugar for the past two months. More recently, I only take a single reading in the am upon rising. I can see that my blood sugar will be between 4.6-5 mmol/L of fasting blood glucose if I am consistent with a proper diet and activity output. Using these values, I can easily reconfigure my routine to make quick corrections. These numbers can provide instant feedback on the benefit of our supplementation, exercise, and dietary strategies. Everyone’s blood sugar readings will be somewhat individual and I suggest doing a months-worth of tracking before establishing your baseline values.

Using these feedback tools, we can gain insight into the way our body behaves in response to our dietary and physical pursuits.

Ultimately, it becomes far easier to calibrate our daily health routine, dietary, and activity levels using these as a guide.

Feedback Tools in Summary

The incidences of coronaviruses may be on the rise, which means we must begin taking more self-accountability today.

Using simple feedback tools, we can monitor the direct impacts of our dietary choices and activity levels. The goal of using such means is to enable us to calibrate our existing health strategy for improved weight management and avoidance of chronic conditions.
