Bio

Sharon has long had an interest in nutrition, particularly in the body mind spirit connection and the importance of managing stress. Her interest brought her to the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition where she was able to balance evening classes with her job. She appreciated the diverse classroom where students’ ages spanned decades and shared their varied experiences. She loved the beautiful insights that came from her class and how it created opportunities to connect and learn from one another. The more she learned in class, the more she wanted to find ways to harmonize life (finding that elusive work life balance) and finding practical ways to improve health.

After graduation, Sharon worked at Canadian Cancer Society and used her knowledge to help encourage wellness with those at work, not just with those in leadership roles, but with team members. She was then invited to be part of Wellness Committee. She continued learning and expanding her nutrition and wellness knowledge.

Her knowledge was really put to the test when she had an accident and fell off her husband’s motorcycle. She learned to transition and adapt, navigating injury with practitioners and nutrition. She started developing recipes, turning regular recipes into nutrient-dense ones to help her recovery.  This turned into sharing more and more recipes while using alternative approaches to deal with pain (meditation, breath work, topical creams, supplements). With these disruptions to her life and health, Sharon learned how to learn again, but also shared those lessons with others, creating community connections.

She started being more active on LinkedIn and that opened the door to speaking at virtual events. That grew to starting a website, starting a newsletter and blog, teaching and educating opportunities, speaking on podcasts, and even more events. Another challenge came when she slipped and fell, needing a hip replacement. She used her holistic nutrition knowledge and Pilates to help her recovery journey. This experience increased lessons she could teach, like rehab and thriving post injury, using ger lived experience and education to help others.

Life is constantly changing, and there are disruptions and opportunities that come and go. But something that has never changed for Sharon was the importance of community, building connection, and nourishing wellbeing and health and ensuring burnout doesn’t happen.

Why CSNN?

Sadly like many, I was experiencing a great deal of digestive discomfort, with no answers for many years.  This opened windows to look at different recipes and read extensively on gut health, stress and nutrition.  I started looking into holistic health programs and attending open house events.

My interest lay in learning more about the intersection with the body, mind and spirit.  I also felt if I was to pursue this additional learning it had to be in concert with my more than full time job as an executive assistant.

The beauty of the part-time program is you can also work while taking these courses.  I am incredibly grateful for the learning at CSNN.  Not only was the learning beautiful, it was the relationships with those in our class.  It is not very often you have an opportunity to engage in learning with others where the ages span close to 3 decades, where each person is incredibly supportive of the other.  CSNN creates a nourishing culture of learning and sharing.

Why did you decide to work in this industry? Why holistic nutrition?

I wanted to take my life experience, learning in management, project management and holistic nutrition to share the ways we can invest in our wellbeing, to live a life where we thrive in all aspects of it. I was fascinated by the ways to reduce stress. I wanted to learn more about the intersection of the body, mind and spirit, using food as medicine.

Was there a particular course/learning experience that motivated you towards your career path?

The courses on the Body Mind Spirit and Aging truly resonated with me, sharing greater insights that this was a path I wanted to pursue.

How did you choose your specialty/area of focus?

I chose to focus on reducing burnout, as it is so challenging to find answers, as each of us are unique. I experienced burnout and wanted to share my insights through a holistic lens so others could consider different ways forward.

What does a typical work day look like for you?

Each day and week are very different. As I am working with four different practitioners for my rehab journey, my workday is scheduled around these appointments, taking into account the recovery from each appointment.

A typical Monday is:

  • 9:30 am – Contributing Speaker on the Ledge, that Rita Ernst hosts
  • 10:30 am – 1:1 Rehab Pilates
  • Noon – Break for lunch
  • 1:00 pm – Networking or Research or Meetings
  • 3:00 pm – Step away from technology
  • 4:30 pm – Admin, social media and follow up on e-mails
  • 6:00 pm – Dinner
  • 8:30 pm –  Reflection on the day in my journal and reading a physical book.

Baking requests for Clients are done on a Wednesday or Thursday afternoon to ensure that Acupuncture and Physio is scheduled around these activities.

What was your career "a-ha!" moment?

When I was working at the Canadian Cancer Society, as an Executive Assistant. I had been a Registered Holistic Nutritionist at that point for about six months or so. I started to see one of the Directors was showing signs of being very stressed. I shared this with the Executive I worked with and she asked me to go spend time with this individual. Our first meeting was 90 minutes, talking about boundaries, true priorities, harmonizing life and managing her schedule in new ways.  Her staff started dropping by asking more questions. They realized change was possible.  Due to that conversation, we started making different changes. Shortly after this I was asked to do a Lunch-and-Learn. More than half of the team showed up, asking questions. As I always do, I featured a number of healthy options. I received so many positive comments and emails sharing, this was just what they needed. For me, this showed what I was sharing resonated strongly, giving them tools for something different.

Do you have a go-to recipe?

My most popular recipe to bring to a gathering is the Pumpkin Seed and Almond Butter Nourishing Oat Bars.  This is often requested.  As my Pilates Teacher, Olivia shares these are like a Terry’s Orange, only much better.

My two top requested recipes are:

Gluten Free Earl Grey Shortbread featuring the Denman Island Tea’s Cream of Earl Grey and my Gluten Free Lemon Shortbread Tarts.  Both top favourites.

What are your 3 favourite things in your fridge/pantry?

Some of my top favourites are:

  • Raw Cashews
  • Zucchini
  • Nutritional Yeast

It is amazing what is possible when you soak cashews in water.  They make a perfect filling for plant-based lasagna or a plant-based cheesecake.
