Tell us about yourself!

I love bringing different passions together. For over 25 years, I worked in arts and culture across
public and private sectors, expressed myself creatively through film and photography, and now
I’m doing what I love most, helping women thrive through holistic nutrition and healthy aging.

Why did you decide to work in this industry?

The decision was truly easy. After recovering from an autoimmune disease through nutrition, I
discovered its transformative power firsthand. Caring for my mom through her vascular
dementia journey deepened this understanding. I saw how crucial nutrition is for brain health
and aging well. That experience was an unexpected gift that helped me reset my life and pursue
work I’m genuinely passionate about.

What brought you to study holistic nutrition at CSNN?

After being diagnosed with an autoimmune disease in 2007, I worked with a CSNN-trained
holistic nutritionist whose guidance changed my life and brought me to indeterminate remission.
That powerful experience showed me what’s possible through holistic nutrition, and I knew I
wanted to help others experience the same transformation.

How did you choose your specialty/area of focus?

I love this question. Honestly, my specialty chose me. My own health journey, combined with
supporting my mom through dementia, gave me a profound appreciation for how nutrition
supports not just our immediate health, but our body, mind, and spirit as we age.

What does a typical work day look like for you?

Every week looks a little different, which I really love. I split my time between researching and
delivering workshops—both online and in-person—for various clients, working one-on-one with
individuals, and writing articles and blogs. Lately, I’ve been collaborating more with other
wellness professionals in the healthy aging space, which has been really exciting.

What was your career "a-ha" moment?

It was actually a series of mini revelations that led me to pivot careers in my 50s. Friends and
family were surprised, as aren’t we “supposed” to wind down at this age? But caring for my mom
during COVID taught me how fleeting life is. I thought: if not now, when? So I leaned in
completely and followed my passion.

Was there a particular course at CSNN that motivated you towards your career path?

Definitely! The Natural Nutrition program built my foundation, but the Advanced Holistic
Nutrition Certificate in Cognitive Support was transformative. That course helped me frame
exactly where I wanted to focus, and confirmed that brain health and healthy aging were my true
calling.

“Kelly delivered an outstanding presentation to members of our employee networks at Public Safety Canada. Her session was both engaging and highly informative, transforming a topic that often feels intimidating into something approachable and relatable. Kelly’s human-centred approach created a safe space for learning and sparked meaningful conversation among the participants. What is your favourite thing about what you do?

My favourite thing is witnessing transformation. When I share the power of food with someone,
and they make even one small change that positively impacts their life, that moment of seeing it
click for them is pure magic.

What's your go-to recipe?

My go-to recipe is Double Fudge Brownies from Kathy Smart’s Live the Smart Way cookbook. The secret ingredient? Black beans! They make the brownies incredibly fudgy while adding protein, fibre, and antioxidants. You can find the recipe here.

What are your 3 favourite things in your fridge/pantry?

This is tough—I love so many things! But here are my top three:

  1. Beans – All kinds: lentils, chickpeas, black beans, split peas. They’re an inexpensive protein source with amazing shelf life, and I’m always discovering new recipes. Plus, my favourite brownie recipe is bean-based!
  2. Greek yogurt – It’s a microbiome superstar and so versatile. I use it as a base for dips, smoothies, marinades, and sauces, and sneak it into baked goods like muffins and pancakes for extra protein.
  3. Green tea – My absolute go-to drink and essential to my autoimmune recovery. I love it hot or cold, with frozen fruit or mint. Bonus: Used tea sachets are wonderful for soothing skin or reducing redness.

Kelly facilitated an incredible online presentation for an employee lunch and learn program we organized at Canada Post. The focus was Nutrition and the Aging Brain. She was knowledgeable, professional, and a wonderful speaker. She answered all the questions succinctly and respectfully. She really made a difference in the lives of those who attended by providing smart information and tips to stay healthy. The response to the event was overwhelmingly positive. We would be happy to invite her again for one of her other presentations.
