How to Avoid GM Produce

CSNN National Page > How to Avoid GM Produce

There are four genetically modified (GM or genetically engineered) foods that could be in the produce section of your grocery store: GM sweetcorn, GM pineapple, GM papaya, and GM squash. For details click here to see our “Summer DIY Guide: Avoiding GM Fruit & Veg”, published in the Watershed Sentinel magazine. The guide gives a quick glance at the GM fruits and vegetables that could be on the market in Canada.

  1. GM sweetcorn could be in some stores and farmers’ markets. We have more detailed information in our consumer guide to GM sweetcorn in Canada and our farmer guide to identifying and avoiding GM sweetcorn seed. All of our information on GM corn is posted at www.cban.ca/corn
  2. A GM pink pineapple is sold at Costco stores.
  3. GM papaya is imported from the US (Hawaii), but most papaya in Canadian stores comes from other countries.
  4. A small amount of GM squash (just a few varieties) is grown in the US. These probably won’t make it into your store, but it’s good to check if you don’t want to eat it.

Check the guide for a bit more information on these products.
